The Fashion Industry and Its Effects

The Fashion Industry and Its Effects Written By: Aparna Syam  What is the Fashion Industry?      The fashion industry is one of the fastest growing industries with an annual growth rate of 21%. It is an industry worth 30 billion dollars and employs millions of people all over the world.     An industry as big as this is bound to have a profound effect on the lives of a “normal people” everywhere but the manifestation of those effects can vary depending on the socio-economic factors that one experiences. The Fashion Industry and the Socio-Political Ramifications      Most industries fuelled by multinational corporations are notorious for the exploitation of their factory workers and the fashion industry is no different.     Brands such as Zara, H&M and many more who market themselves as “affordable” often cut corners by forcing their workers to work incredibly long hours for less than a minimum wage....

Goals of JOY'US

What is JOY'US?

JOY'US is a Youth Organization aimed to empower children with special needs. The organization was founded in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in June 2020.

Why special needs?

The special needs community is one of many groups severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As many schools and centers have closed down, they have to cope with the loss of the activities that were once a part of their every-day lives. It is JOY'US's mission to provide 'JOY' through 'US' to the children in order to mimic and bring back a part of their daily lives.

Contributions

JOY'US has had the privilege of connecting with multiple centers and elementary schools to help children with special needs. One of many programs JOY'US offers, Crafting Projects, is a major part of the organization. Brookhaven Elementary school has been a partner of JOY'US elementary school and we have made 100+ craft kits for the children with special needs in order to stimulate their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) minds.

Aside from that, JOY'US has been promoting awareness through social media with monthly posts on the different types of special needs and clearing any misconceptions people may have.

What Can You do?

If you're reading this and thinking, what can I do? I'm not even in the United States. I'm really far, how can I help? That's great! No need to worry.

JOY'US is open to anyone from any country. Online opportunities include article writing, article editing, and video making for drawings for the children to watch and craft. Each of these opportunities provides students to earn community service hours and some of these great contributions get to be featured on our social media.

You can join the JOY'US remind by texting @joyus to 81010 for all reminders and updates (including in-person future volunteer events in Orange County). Next, join our Google Classroom to get involved in ALL ONLINE volunteer opportunities (including article writing, article editing, and making drawing videos)!

Our Google Classroom code: i47x45z

You can be a part of the cause and help JOY'US break boundaries, become a part of a welcoming community, and most importantly help empower students with disabilities through positive contribution.
